That is a very sweet & heart breaking story, and a legacy of how they “trusted in the Lord for all things forever..”. So much hardship and strength we see when we look back to our history, it gives us hope for our daily walk. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for reading their story and sharing your thoughts with us Shirlee. We each highlight different aspects of this story. I love seeing your highlights. My question: how do I trust if I do not believe in Heavenly Father—God as a man with a grey beard and/or a supernatural force that is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent? I’m an agnostic, but I understand the value of trust in something greater than myself and greater than my family. That optimism and hope is very important. I think we have to work at it everyday. We aren’t all going to agree on how to bring about trust, hope and optimism. I’m not here to talk people out of their beliefs about God, but I do want to emphasize the importance of optimism, respect, entrepreneurialism, faith in us (i.e. humans), and making small improvements that lead to bigger improvements. For some people this comes through daily prayer. How do I pray if I don’t believe? My answer is that I say what I’m grateful for, everyday. I ask my family members to do the same at dinner.

I’ll also add that “trusted in the Lord for all things forever” still speaks to me. It’s still important to me. I see myself as the carrier of Mabel’s genes. She and her parents aren’t “dead;” they live on through me. This DNA evolves through us, and has been for billions of years and I hope for billions more. That comes close the being forever, eternal, and immortal. It tells me that my main goal is the survival of children and my DNA.
